Creation of the Seventeenth Men

Last and First Men

The Creation of the Seventeenth Men is the Sixteenth Men’s answer to the limits of individual consciousness: they devise a new human type intended to awaken through the mental fusion of many individuals. The result appears to fulfill their deepest hopes, but its makers cannot perceive its subtle imperfections. The Seventeenth Men therefore inherit both the ambition to exceed their predecessors and the dissatisfaction that leads them to create a successor.

The Sixteenth Men’s Impasse

The Sixteenth Men had advanced understanding and creativity as far as an individual human brain could carry them in physical isolation, yet this achievement sharpened their awareness of what they could not know. Their profound philosophical inquiry still left them amid uncertainty, especially about the nature of time and the relation between mind and world. They also struggled to reconcile loyalty to life, understood as being embattled against death, with the desire to rise above that struggle and contemplate it dispassionately.

These questions endured through successive cultural florescences. Thought repeatedly revisited its possible modes and found new significance in old themes, but the central problems remained unsolved, troubling individuals and impairing the race’s direction. Faced with a choice between spiritual stagnation and a dangerous leap into the unknown, the Sixteenth Men decided to create a brain capable of mental fusion among many individuals. They hoped that this new form of consciousness would disclose the heart of existence and clarify the racial purpose that philosophical ignorance had obscured.

The New Human Type

The project required an immense span of time: a hundred million years passed before the Sixteenth Men produced the new human type. Its creators believed they had attained their hearts’ desire. In their view, mental fusion had opened a path beyond the limitations that had confined humanity to the isolated brain.

That apparent success was not the whole story. The beings the Sixteenth Men had made were afflicted by subtle imperfections that lay beyond their makers’ comprehension. The distance between the creators’ confident judgment and the new species’ actual condition establishes the central reversal of the event: the intended advance in consciousness does not produce a perfected humanity.

The Seventeenth Men and Their Successor

Once the Seventeenth Men had populated the world and reached full cultural stature, they devoted their strength to producing another human type. They sought a species essentially like themselves but perfected, repeating the logic of creation that had given rise to their own people. Their response to their predecessors’ failed hopes was thus not to abandon transformation, but to attempt it again.

The Seventeenth Men’s career lasted only a few hundred thousand years. It was crowded with splendour and agony, and ended when they gave way to the Eighteenth Men, who would be the final human species. The narrator passes over the earlier cultures because they find their fulfilment in the world of the Last Men, turning away from this compressed succession of creation and replacement toward the book’s account of its modern age. The event consequently marks both a new mode of consciousness sought through collective minds and another handover in humanity’s long sequence of imperfect successors.
